Britain and America have reached a landmark trade agreement that will guarantee no import taxes on UK drug exports being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to increase spending on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these crucial goods will be held at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This deal is in response to previous statements to significantly raise import taxes on branded drug imports, with increases floated as high as double the cost.

"This arrangement between the UK reinforces the global environment for new treatments and brings long-overdue fairness to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Commercial Significance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the the United Kingdom's most significant export categories to the America, which is by far the largest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures indicate that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This agreement safeguards work, increases funding and sets the stage for the UK to become a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," a minister commented.

Key British Pledges

The agreement involves several key commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to increase total public funding on drugs from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. In the past, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement comes amid a ongoing row between the drug companies and the UK government over spending levels and NHS adoption.

This friction were heightened by arguments that American consumers were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than people in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been announced toward American operations.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its total funding over the past decade.
