The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
