The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
