The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
